A $14.34 million flood control project has begun on Pittsburgh’s Parkway Central, also known as the “bathtub,” resulting in the closure of two major ramps and part of the Parkway for the next 10 months.

The Grant Street on-ramp to the westbound I-376 is now closed, affecting drivers leaving downtown Pittsburgh for the airport or other western destinations. Additionally, the ramp from westbound Parkway to Stanwix Street, a key route for drivers heading into downtown, is also closed.

With many people in the city on Saturday night for Oktoberfest and a Pittsburgh Penguins game, some residents expressed concerns about potential traffic issues.

“Just think traffic is going to be really backed up and everything’s going to be a mess. Thank God, it’s a weekend, though, you know, not on a weekday. So I hope it won’t be that bad,” said William Thomas.

Others noted the closures could cause confusion, especially for visitors unfamiliar with the area.

“I think the commute is definitely going to be hard for people. People from out of town are probably going to be pretty confused with the bathtub closed, just hope the traffic won’t be too bad,” said Ari Chamis.

The “bathtub” section of Pittsburgh’s Parkway has experienced more frequent flooding in recent years, leading to closures that divert approximately 43,000 vehicles each time the rivers rise. The project aims to raise the flood wall, reduce flooding, speed up cleanup efforts, and allow the road to reopen more quickly after water recedes.

Drivers who use the Mon Wharf will also be affected, as PennDOT plans to close more than half of the parking spaces on the Wharf to accommodate construction vehicles. This closure is set to begin on Monday.
