Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Derrick Harmon is expected to miss multiple weeks with a foot injury suffered on Thursday Night Football against the Cleveland Browns.
Harmon suffered the left foot injury in the first half of what became a 27-24 Steelers loss to the Browns, and was taken from the field on a cart. He was later seen at Huntington Bank Field wearing a protective boot on his injured foot.
According to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Sunday morning, Harmon is expected to be miss multiple weeks, and could be a candidate to be placed on the injured reserve list.
Players placed on IR must miss at least four weeks, by NFL rule. Teams are allowed to return eight players from the IR list over the course of the season. The Steelers have already used two return designations.
Harmon, the Steelers’ first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, had one of the most impactful plays of his career in Week 3, when his strip sack of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow sealed the Steelers victory.
After recording three sacks as a rookie in 2025, he has 1.5 already through four games in 2026.
Harmon entered the league known primarily as a run-stopper, and the Steelers’ run defense was much better in the 12 games Harmon played as a rookie than the five games he missed with a knee injury.
In the five games he missed, the Steelers allowed an average of 165 rushing yards per game. In the 12 games he played, they averaged 91 rushing yards per game allowed.
With Harmon out, the Steelers will have to lean one of second-year defensive lineman Yahya Black and veteran Sebastian Joseph-Day to step into the staring lineup in the team’s base defense, and rookie Gabriel Rubio, who has been a healthy scratch for the first four games of the season, will probably work his way into the lineup.
