The Pittsburgh Penguins go for three straight wins to open the season when they host the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.
The Pittsburgh Penguins look to stay undefeated in the early season as they face the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night. The Penguins have not wanted for offense in their first two games of the season. Pittsburgh opened the season with its in-state rivalry when the Penguins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 7-0, with goalie Arturs Silovs making 19 saves. The Penguins weren’t as sharp in front of net in their second game, but the result was the same, with a 6-5 overtime win on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens in their home opener. The Penguins looked like they were going to run away with the game again in Game 2, despite the Canadiens scoring in under four minutes to start. The Penguins tied it up on the power play with Evgeni Malkin’s first goal of the game to end the first period. Pittsburgh would score five unanswered goals after that first Canadiens goal to go up 5-1, but then the Penguins got complacent. Montreal scored four straight goals, with Ivan Demidov scoring with just 44 seconds left in regulation. Fortunately for Pittsburgh, Tommy Novak bailed them out with the overtime game-winner. It was Novak’s second goal of the game, and he added an assist to earn the first star of the night. Malkin was the third star of the night with the first goal and two assists, including on the overtime winner.

Kyle Connor was the MVP of the game, scoring two power-play goals and adding an assist on the first goal, scored by Cole Perfetti. Connor rightfully earned the first star of the game, while Perfetti earned the second with a goal and two assists. Winnipeg scored the first three goals, but Detroit came back.
