PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police are investigating a weekend shooting near an entertainment venue in the city’s Spring Garden neighborhood that left one man injured and the shooter unidentified.
The shooting occurred on the 1000 block of Spring Garden Street. Surveillance video captured the incident as it unfolded early Sunday morning, according to police.
Investigators believe the incident began when a man left a nearby entertainment venue and became involved in an altercation.
Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace said, “He exited, he got into some sort of an altercation with, who we believe based on the information given to us so far, was a security guard at that same nightclub.”
According to investigators, the confrontation escalated and involved three men approaching a fourth man, who can be seen in surveillance video backing away. As the confrontation moved off camera, at least one gunshot was heard.
Moments later, the man who appeared to be backing away was seen leaving the area, while the person who was shot stumbled along the sidewalk.
Police said they have not been able to identify the shooter, and the person’s whereabouts remain unknown. Authorities also noted that the shooter is not being referred to as a suspect in the case at this point.
The shooting has done little to ease concerns among some residents and workers in the neighborhood.
Kayela Pearsall, who lives in Spring Garden, said, “Previously, I seen a body on that step right there. So, every time I walk past, I always have that in my head.”
Another resident, Scott McCaughey, said, “So, I think it’s a lot of crime and all that. A lot of drugs, you know?”
The person who was shot remained in stable condition at Jefferson Hospital as of the latest update.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators.
