Bicentennial Tower - 1

As millions of birds make their seasonal journey across North America, Erie is doing its part to help make that migration a little safer.

The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority announced that the lights on the Bicentennial Tower will be turned off on the evening of October 6 to help reduce light pollution during a peak period of bird migration.

The Lake Erie shoreline serves as a major migration corridor for millions of birds each spring and fall. Many species travel at night and rely on natural light from the moon and stars to navigate. Bright artificial lighting can disrupt those patterns, causing birds to become disoriented and increasing the risks they face during their long journeys.

Port Authority officials say the temporary blackout is part of an effort to support bird-friendly conservation practices and raise awareness about the impact of artificial light on migrating wildlife.

Residents may also notice the Bicentennial Tower lights turned off on select evenings throughout the migration season as these conservation efforts continue.

Officials are encouraging community members to participate by reducing unnecessary outdoor lighting whenever possible during peak migration periods.
