Highmark Health has named Karen Hanlon as its new CEO, making her the first woman to lead the Pittsburgh-based healthcare giant.
Hanlon will begin working in her new position and continuing her duties as president starting Jan. 1.
Hanlon replaces David Holmberg, who has served as CEO since 2014. He will transition into the role of executive chairman, where he will facilitate a “smooth leadership transition.”
In a news release, Highmark Health said “she will assume responsibility for leading all aspects of Highmark Health’s strategy, operations, growth and performance across its health plans, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and diversified businesses.”
Hanlon has worked for Highmark for nearly 30 years and helped oversee the expansion of the enterprise from approximately $17 billion in revenue in 2014 to nearly $35 billion projected for the end of 2026.
“The Board has tremendous confidence in Karen’s ability to lead the organization into its next chapter,” said Greg Jordan, Highmark Health board chair. “We are grateful to David Holmberg for his consistent and courageous leadership over the past 12 years and are pleased he will continue supporting the organization as executive chairman.”
Hanlon was named chief operating officer in 2018 and president in 2025.
“Karen is an exceptional leader whose vision, operational expertise and unwavering commitment to the people we serve have helped shape Highmark Health into the organization it is today,” said Holmberg.
