The fountain at the Pennsylvania state Capitol is flowing pink this month to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month and recognize survivors and those who have lost their lives to the disease.

This morning, members of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and other advocates gathered to highlight the importance of early detection and mammograms. Pennsylvania is the first state in the nation to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for screenings and testing.

“It’s to celebrate all women in PA and some men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and to give them the support and attention they deserve,” said Pat Halpin-Murphy, founder of the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, 38 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day in the state. When detected at its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is more than 90%.
