Erie officials are set to host a public meeting to provide information and facilitate a community Q&A about the town’s use of automated license plate reader technology, including Flock cameras.

Mayor Andrew Moore and police Chief Lee Mathis are slated to lead a presentation and Q&A from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Town Hall Council Chambers at 645 Holbrook St.

The meeting will also be livestreamed on YouTube at www.erieco.gov/YouTube.

To participate, community members can submit questions in advance through the form available at www.erieco.gov/Oct8.

They can also submit written questions during the meeting, either in person or through Zoom at this link: tinyurl.com/ErieZoomLink.

Attendees will be allowed up to two minutes to speak during the meeting, either in person or online. The “majority” of the meeting will be dedicated to public questions and comments, a town announcement says.

The meeting will begin with an overview of how automated license plate reader technology works, what information the cameras capture, and how the technology differs from traffic enforcement cameras. A presentation will also cover the current number and placement of cameras, the criteria used to determine their locations, and how the program is funded, the announcement says.

Privacy and data governance will also be a focus of the discussion. Topics will include how long data is retained, who can access and search the system, safeguards and auditing procedures designed to prevent misuse, policies regarding sharing information with other law enforcement agencies, and data security and ownership.

The Town Council could have future discussions, and policy review may be scheduled, based on the community discussion.
