James Arthur Henry Wikkerink, of Lower Macungie Township, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest at 12:37 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio announced Thursday, Oct. 8.

An autopsy conducted Thursday determined his manner of death was suicide, Buglio said. The coroner’s release did not specify the medical cause of death or describe the circumstances of the incident.

On Sept. 25, less than two weeks before his death, Wikkerink shared a cryptic message on his Facebook page:

“The new American dream is to die for someone or something and never be recognized for it.”

It is unclear what Wikkerink meant by the message or whether it had any connection to his death.

His Facebook profile listed him as living in Allentown and originally from Sparta, Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe organized by his brother, David Wikkerink, described a fatal incident at James’ residence on Saturday, Oct. 3, followed by four days in the hospital.

“Following a fatal incident occurring at his residence on October 3, 2026, my brother James struggled at Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest Hospital for 4 days before ultimately reuniting with the Lord in Paradise,” David wrote.

The fundraiser does not identify the incident as a suicide, instead describing it as a “fatal incident.” That account differs from the coroner’s official ruling of suicide, although the two descriptions are not necessarily contradictory.

David said he created the fundraiser on behalf of his mother and siblings, who were devastated by the loss.

He identified James as a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps and said his brother would be buried in his military dress uniform with military honors.

“I was asked to create this GoFundMe on behalf of my mother and siblings, who are devastated in these extremely trying times, and would like to ask any of James’ friends, congregation members, and the countless number of souls he has touched to assist in any way they can with expenses related to his funeral and burial,” David wrote.

The family has scheduled his funeral for Friday, Oct. 9, at Resurrection and Life Cemetery, according to the fundraiser.

As of Thursday morning, the campaign had raised $4,980 toward its $6,500 goal through 62 donations.

One supporter, Zayne and Abigail Herda, left a tribute reading, “Rest high on that mountain brother🖤”

The circumstances of the Oct. 3 incident have not been publicly detailed in the information released by the coroner.
