The first Atlantic hurricane of the season — Isaias — has formed in the Gulf. Landfall is anticipated late Friday night or Saturday morning along the coast of Alabama or the western Florida panhandle.

Western Pennsylvania comes into the conversation with the remnants of the storm on a fast track northeastward over the weekend. Sunday will be a soggy one and is already an Impact Day.

The track and intensity of Hurricane Isaias

Isaias strengthened to the first Atlantic hurricane of the season on Thursday. The Category 2 storm continues intensifying in the warm Gulf waters ahead of landfall.

Isaias 11 AM Thursday update

The storm is on track to make landfall between coastal Mississippi and the far western Florida panhandle. This will be a big rainmaker along with threats from storm surge and damaging winds.

How will Isaias impact the Pittsburgh area?

The remnants of Isaias will race northward throughout the weekend. The rainbands will spread soggy conditions to parts of the Midwest, the Ohio Valley and eventually the Northeast. In Western Pennsylvania, the impacts could be felt as early as Saturday night and linger through Monday morning. Sunday will be the wettest day.

Impact Day Sunday for tropical rain

The exact timing of the rain’s arrival on Sunday is still questionable. Right now, the timing looks to bring rain Sunday morning with the heaviest and widespread rain ending Sunday evening.

Sunday is shaping up to be a wet one thanks to the remnants of Isaias.

Periods of heavy rain are possible, especially around midday, making for a soggy Steelers tailgate and game. Rainfall totals currently look to be generally between one-half and one inch of rain, with locally higher amounts possible.

The finer details, including timing and totals, will become clearer once Isaias makes landfall.

This will be a drawn-out rain event. The ground should be able to handle this amount of rain over the extended period. The flooding threat is low, but if the remnants slow down, there could be more concerns.
