Amtrak will begin operating a second daily round trip between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg on Nov. 18, doubling passenger rail service on a route that connects western Pennsylvania with Philadelphia and New York City.

The expansion follows years of coordination among the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Amtrak and freight railroad Norfolk Southern.

The additional service will give passengers more flexibility on Amtrak’s 444-mile Pennsylvanian route, which currently operates one daily round trip between Pittsburgh and New York City.

The Shapiro administration has invested more than $80 million in the expansion. Pennsylvania also received $143 million in federal funding in 2023 to support infrastructure and safety improvements along the route.

Construction on some of those improvements is already underway or complete, according to PennDOT.

Tickets for the second daily train are now available through Amtrak’s website and mobile app.
