The United Way of Erie County is inviting the community to get a firsthand look at how local Community Schools are helping students and families succeed through a new immersive event called Assembly 2026: Community Schools in Action.
The event will take place on October 13 at the Bayfront Convention Center, transforming the organization’s traditional biannual meeting into an interactive experience highlighting the partnerships, programs, and services that support students throughout Erie County.
Rather than a traditional presentation, attendees will move through a series of hands-on exhibits designed to showcase the Community School model. Guests will have opportunities to explore family engagement initiatives, after-school programming, classroom enrichment activities, student leadership development, health and wellness services, and school pride projects.
Among the featured experiences will be a chance to tour the Vision to Learn mobile clinic, participate in STEM activities hosted by Wabtec and ERIEZ Magnetics, and take part in the same team-building exercises used by Community School student leaders.
“Community Schools can be difficult to fully understand until you see the work in action,” said Mike Jaruszewicz, president of United Way of Erie County. “Assembly 2026 is our opportunity to bring that experience to the community.”
The event will also include a welcome presentation and the annual Tocqueville Award ceremony. This year’s award will honor Dana and Pete Zaphiris for their longtime volunteer service and commitment to the mission of United Way.
Following the award presentation, attendees are invited to stay for a Tocqueville Reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and an open bar.
Currently serving as the backbone organization for 17 Community Schools across Erie County, United Way of Erie County coordinates resources and partnerships aimed at removing non-academic barriers to student success. Community Schools connect students and families with services ranging from health care and wellness support to family engagement opportunities and after-school programs.
Doors open at 3:30 p.m., with interactive activities running until 4:45 p.m. The award presentation begins at 5 p.m., followed by the reception at 5:30 p.m. Community members are encouraged to attend.
