Gannon University has announced a change in leadership, with Dr. Walter Iwanenko stepping down as president and Dr. Keith Taylor returning to serve as interim president during the search for a permanent successor. The transition became effective October 8.

Iwanenko, who became president in July 2023 after serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs, said his decision comes as the university nears completion of its merger with Ursuline College, a key initiative during his tenure.

“Serving Gannon University has been a tremendous privilege,” Iwanenko said in a statement. “I committed to Gannon to see us through the merger with Ursuline College and now that it is nearly done, I am stepping down to pursue other opportunities.”

During his time at Gannon, Iwanenko helped oversee the growth of the university’s Ruskin, Florida, campus, the development of the Institute for Cyber Knowledge (I-HACK), and a partnership with First Ascent Biomedical. University officials also noted that Gannon climbed 38 spots in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings during his presidency.

The university’s Board of Trustees selected Dr. Keith Taylor, who previously served as Gannon’s president for 12 years and now holds the title of president emeritus, to guide the institution through the transition period and presidential search. Taylor will serve as president of both Gannon University and Ursuline College.

According to university officials, Taylor’s previous tenure included restructuring academic programs, expanding Gannon’s regional and global presence, and helping establish the Ruskin campus.

The Most Rev. Lawrence T. Persico, Bishop of Erie and chair of Gannon’s Board of Trustees, said Taylor’s experience and understanding of the university’s mission make him well-suited to lead during this period of transition.

Taylor said he looks forward to reconnecting with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners as the university continues several major initiatives, including the acquisition of Ursuline College and the expansion of research opportunities through I-HACK.
