The Allegheny County Health Department confirmed both people attend the same school.
A second case of measles has been confirmed in Allegheny County.
The Allegheny County Health Department confirmed on Friday that the second person does not live in the same house as the minor who tested positive for the disease this past Monday.
The ACHD confirmed both students went to the same school in the North Hills. The department previously told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 there were no school exposures in relation to the first case.
According to our partners at the Trib, Eden Christian Academy has put out a statement regarding measles in their community.
“We are working directly and in full cooperation with the Allegheny County Health Department and implementing their protocol to mitigate further spread.”
According to the Trib, only 83% of the students at the academy’s 2 elementary schools are fully immunized.
How the County is responding
“This connection significantly expands our investigation,” said Dr. Jillian Irwin, Allegheny County Health Department Medical Director. “Determining how these individuals were infected and the details of all additional exposures is key to successfully stopping further spread.”
The ACHD will contact people who were exposed to the student. The Health Department says the person in the first confirmed case may have exposed people at a Target on McKnight Road in McCandless at the Pine Creek shopping center on Oct. 1.
As of Friday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed 1,136 cases, and 5 deaths from measles since late August.
