Lora Roberts, one of the victims of Friday’s shooting, is being remembered for her dedication to volunteerism and her commitment to helping people in need throughout the Erie community.
Chris Tombaugh, executive director of Community of Caring and a personal friend of Roberts, reflected on her life and legacy, highlighting her compassion for others and her willingness to help whenever she could.
Before her death on October 9, Roberts worked as a nurse’s aide and planned to begin nursing school in November.
Tombaugh said Roberts’ desire to help others was evident in both her personal life and her volunteer work.
As a volunteer and former board member of Community of Caring, Roberts helped improve programs designed to better support people experiencing homelessness. She also volunteered with the Mercy Center for Women, which supports women in need.
Tombaugh said Roberts had a particular passion for helping homeless individuals, women, and children, often putting others’ needs ahead of her own.
Roberts’ legacy of kindness is also reflected in a Facebook post she shared on July 15, encouraging people to check on their loved ones and lead with kindness.
Tombaugh said the message reflected the person Roberts was, noting that she lost her life while trying to help her niece during Friday’s shooting.
A GoFundMe has been established to support Roberts’ family. A link to the fundraiser is available below:
