A 32-year-old Allentown man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was sentenced on Wednesday for a 2023 murder.
According to law enforcement officials in the Lehigh Valley, Evander Thompson, 32, was sentenced after being convicted in July of killing Orlando Ibanez, 61, of Allentown, in a shooting on Allen Street in September of 2023.
Court documents claim that surveillance cameras captured images of a man, later identified at Thompson, entering the West Allen Street home where the slaying occurred just prior to the shooting as well as showing him run from the scene after the incident.
Also, court documents claim, Thompson was also captured on surveillance video using his cellphone shortly after the incident occurred.
A review of Thompson’s cellphone, court documents said, revealed he sent a text to, what officials called, his “paramour” the words “he dead” shortly after walking away from the scene of the shooting.
In a search of Thompson’s home on the 200 block of North Nagle Street in Allentown, police recovered a gun believed to have been used in the shooting, though, court documents note, when it was recovered, the firearm was in the possession of Thompson’s underaged son.
Bullets found in the victim’s body and shells at the scene of the shooting, court documents note, matched the firearm that was recovered from the boy.
Also, on social media, police recovered video that Thompson filmed of himself holding the weapon used in the murder, court documents note.
While he has been sentenced to serve life in prison for Ibanez’s slaying, Thompson remains a person of interest in the murder of 16-year-old Maleaha Journ’e Talton, whose body was discovered wrapped in a carpet along a wooded trail in Ferguson, Missouri, officials said.
Thompson had been dating Talton at the time when her body was found in 2016 after she had been beaten and shot in the head, officials said.
Though no charges have been officially filed in that case, officials said Thompson remains the only person of interest in that ongoing investigation.
Officials noted that members of Talton’s family attended Thompson’s sentencing on Wednesday.
This case remains open and an in investigation is being handled by the Missouri Police Department. Anyone who may have information on that case is asked to call 314-522-3100.
