READING, Pa. – Berks County District Attorney John Adams has ruled a shooting that took place in Reading’s Glenside neighborhood on Thursday afternoon a homicide.
Reading Police say at approximately 3:55 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of Avenue B for reports of a person who had been shot.
“My neighborhood was disrupted. Kids feel unsafe, and we just want to know what’s going on. We’re concerned people,” explained a resident who witnessed the incident.
That resident says they were inside their home when they heard several shots around 4 p.m.
“It was a pop, a noise followed after that. It was a little pause, and before you know it, it was a barrage of shots that were unfortunately familiar,” said the resident.
They said multiple children were being dismissed from school at the time and were around the area shortly after the shooting.
“I went to go meet my child who was downstairs, and I was concerned about her safety,” the resident said. “From there, I was worrying what was going on. It’s broad daylight, and what is going on at school dismissal time?”
Another neighbor told 69 News they came outside after hearing shots. When they got outside, they saw a young man on the ground with a gun wound in his chest.
They said the victim was given CPR and was allegedly armed.
“It’s odd. It’s weird,” the resident said.
The neighbor expressed shock that this happened in their neighborhood.
“I will say for me, being a resident here, for the time I’ve been here, this is not familiar. This is not a usual thing,” the resident said. “We do generally feel safe. Our kids can come outside, can walk the streets, can get off the bus and do whatever they feel they’re able to do.”
Reading Police say the victim was transported to Reading Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
Police have not released the victim’s name or said if they have any suspects in the deadly shooting.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call the Reading Police Department at 610-655-6116 or contact Crime Alert Berks at 877-373-9913.
