EASTON, Pa.- Demolition will begin soon on the parking deck at the Northampton County Government Center, and a new garage will rise in its place.
The deck at 669 Washington Street in Easton is now closed to the public and county employees. It’s scheduled for demolition the week of Oct. 26.
The new, three-story garage will have 305 spaces, seven more than the current deck, which was built in 1975.
A $35 million bond for the project was approved in February of last year. At the time, it was estimated that the deck would cost about $22 million. The rest of the money was to be used for other capital projects.
The bond was a compromise to a previous $63.5 million proposal that also included a new office building for county employees. County Council rejected that ordinance in November of 2024.
The new garage is scheduled to be ready for use in March 2028.
Northampton County has leased several other parking lots in the Easton area that will be used by county employees during construction, with shuttles bringing them to the government center.
