(WHTM) – Election Day is less than three weeks away, and both government and non-profit groups are encouraging residents not only to get out and vote, but to help the system.

Lauren Cristella, President & CEO of the Committee of Seventy, a good government nonprofit, says the state needs 40,000 poll workers twice a year to make sure elections run smoothly. With concerns of fraud among some in the electorate, Cristella says the best way to understand the system is to participate.

“They can go and serve in one of those important positions, but they should also take a look at the checks and balances that are built into this system, and also to see that no instance of fraud was found in all of those investigations that did happen,” Cristella said.

Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt, who oversees the state’s elections, is also encouraging residents to register to vote before the upcoming deadline.

“Registering to vote takes only a few minutes, and I urge every eligible Pennsylvanian who is not yet registered to vote to do so before the Oct. 19 deadline,” Sec. Schmidt said. “Once you are registered, you can exercise your fundamental right to vote and let your voice be heard in the upcoming general election.”
