How It Happened
The two teams traded chances throughout a scoreless first half. Columbia tested Desai early with a shot from just outside the box, but the Penn goalkeeper dove to make the save. The Lions later sent a free kick from roughly 30 feet wide of the goal, while a shot from beyond the 18-yard box sailed just high with 5:30 remaining in the half.
Penn created a chance of its own in the closing minutes when Abbey Cook drove into the box and sent a cross off a Columbia defender to earn a corner kick. The Lions responded with back-to-back corners, but Casey Forman blocked a shot inside the box to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
The Quakers broke through in the 50th minute. Cook received the ball just beyond midfield, won a one-on-one battle and drove into the box before crossing to a wide-open Capdevila. Capdevila finished with her right foot just inside the post to give Penn a 1-0 lead.
Penn doubled its advantage in the 75th minute following a corner kick. After the ball was sent into the box and cleared toward the top of the area, White collected it outside the 18 and unleashed a left-footed shot that tucked beneath the crossbar to make it 2-0.
Columbia answered less than two minutes later. After a handball was called on Ferraro inside the box, Beltran converted the ensuing penalty kick into the top-left corner to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 76th minute.
The Lions leveled the score in the 78th minute after a corner kick was cleared toward the edge of the box. A Columbia shot from outside the 18 deflected toward the near post, where Javers was waiting to finish and make it 2-2.
Columbia completed the comeback in the 89th minute. A corner kick sailed just over Capdevila and found Medina, who finished from just inside the 18 to give the Lions a 3-2 lead with 1:03 remaining. Penn was unable to find an equalizer in the closing moments.
