A new nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and young adults with special needs is officially launching in Erie.

Bernie’s Buddies, founded by Tristen Trevino, captain of the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, aims to provide support, inclusion, and meaningful opportunities for children and families navigating life with special needs.
The organization was inspired by Trevino’s younger brother, Bernie, whose determination and positive spirit helped shape the mission behind the nonprofit.
“Bernie shows us what true strength looks like,” Trevino said. “He inspires everyone he meets, and his impact continues to grow. This organization is about honoring him by making sure every child like Bernie has access to the resources, opportunities, and friendships they deserve.”
According to organizers, Bernie’s Buddies was created to ensure that no child faces their journey alone. The nonprofit will focus on building support networks, offering inclusive programs, and creating community-driven initiatives designed to foster connection and personal growth.
The organization’s mission centers on walking alongside families and providing encouragement, resources, and opportunities for children and young adults with special needs.
Through partnerships, community outreach, and special events, Bernie’s Buddies hopes to promote a future where inclusion is more than a goal and becomes an everyday reality.
Trevino, who has become known throughout Erie for his leadership both on and off the ice, said his experiences in the community helped inspire the effort.
“Being part of the Erie community has shown me how powerful support can be,” Trevino said. “Bernie’s Buddies is about bringing people together, families, volunteers, teammates, and friends, to make sure every child knows they’re not alone.”
The organization is encouraging local families, volunteers, and supporters to get involved as it begins its work across the community.
