Jere GishHARRISBURG, Pa. —

Gov. Josh Shapiro signed a bill into law that will phase out the use of PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” in firefighting foam.

The law restricts the manufacture, sale, distribution, and use of firefighting foam containing PFAS starting in July 2027.

The bill includes an exemption for facilities where PFAS-based foam remains necessary for safety, such as airports, chemical plants, oil refineries, and sites handling flammable liquids or natural gas.

PFAS exposure has been linked to cancer and other serious health problems.
