TILDEN TWP., Pa. – Jurors have found a 25-year-old man guilty of involuntary manslaughter and recklessly endangering another person in a shooting that occurred in late 2024, Berks County District Attorney John Adams said.

According to DA Adams, Daniel Baumert of Hamburg, has been charged with shooting and killing Dawson Mohl, 24, in December 2024.

The DA said Baumert’s sentencing has been scheduled for Nov. 20.

The shooting, which occurred just after midnight on December 14, 2024, was described by State Police as “negligent homicide” after they responded to the incident at a home in the 1300 block of Hex Highway in Tilden Township.

According to authorities, Mohl was discovered in the basement of the home in a reclining chair, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officials said the troopers placed Mohl on the floor and attempted life-saving efforts. Mohl was pronounced dead at the scene by the Berks County Coroner.

Three men, including Baumert, were at the home with Mohl at the time of the incident. They had been drinking beer after having dinner together, according to one witness.

Part of the evening was spent looking at Baumert’s gun collection. A witness said at a later time that evening “the place lights up,” and he saw Baumert standing over Mohl, who was sitting in a chair.

During a police interview, Baumert told officials he locked the pistols in his gun collection away, but Mohl expressed interest in seeing one of the weapons again.

Baumert said he retrieved the weapon, and when he went to hand it to Mohl, the thumb safety was not engaged, and the gun discharged during the exchange.

The court documents said the victim and the other two men at the home at the time of the shooting were excluded as contributors.
