PENNSYLVANIA (WHP) — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is expected to sign Senate Bill 1014 into law Monday at a Pennsylvania middle school, which would officially prohibit generalized cell phone use from bell-to-bell in schools across Pennsylvania.

Shapiro will visit Lenape Middle School in Doylestown, where he will sign SB 1014, a move the administration said will ensure students can learn without distractions.

The bill would only allow cell phone use for certain medical and emergency exceptions from the morning bell to the end of the school day.

The governor will be joined by school district leaders and public officials for the signing at 11 a.m. after passing the Senate by a 47-3 vote after making it through the House by a 141-62 vote.

“I called for this in my Budget Address and repeatedly urged the legislature to act — and now, we’ve brought Democrats and Republicans together to get this done for our students and our educators. It’s time to get back to the basics in school and let our kids be kids,” Shapiro wrote on social media last week.

The bill will go into effect next year.
