Richard Arthur Schaefer, 85, of Washington Township, Lehigh County, formerly of Bethlehem Township, passed away Friday, October 23, 2026 at St. Luke’s Hospital-Carbon Campus, Lehighton. He was the husband of the late Rita Ann (Kehn) Schaefer who died April 27, 2010. Richard was born on June 28, 1941 in Troy, New York, Rensselaer County, to the late Arthur and Gladys (Danks) Schaefer. He lived a life filled with dedication to his family and his profession. He proudly served as an Office Engineer with Gilbane Construction, traveling across the United States and earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues until his retirement.
Richard was a devoted member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem, where he participated in the Knights of Columbus. His strong faith and commitment to service reflected his character and the values he instilled in his family.
Survivors: sons: Edward P. Schaefer, Daniel R. Schaefer; twin brother: Robert and his wife Kathy Schaefer; sister: Sue and her husband Tim Downs; granddaughter: Skye Lynn Schaefer.
Service: Family and friends are invited to his visitation Thursday, October 29, 2026 from 9-10 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 1817 1st Street, Bethlehem, PA 18020 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am.
