PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Philly Gives fundraising campaign officially launched Monday at the 6abc studios, kicking off a community-driven effort to support 10 nonprofit organizations across the Philadelphia region.
The annual initiative, now in its third year, aims to raise funds for local charities by encouraging donations from Philadelphians.
During the kickoff event, organizers highlighted the campaign’s focus on introducing residents to nonprofit groups working to strengthen communities throughout the region.
John Morris, president and general manager of 6abc, said Action News is proud to serve as a media sponsor of the effort.
“Through this initiative, we and the area’s other media organizations have the opportunity to do what we do best – that is, tell stories, connect with our audiences, and introduce more people to the nonprofits that are serving our communities,” Morris said.
Organizers said the campaign is designed to address critical needs across the region through financial support. Each participating nonprofit will receive a $50,000 grant to help advance its mission in Greater Philadelphia.
Dr. Janet Haas of Philly Gives said the initiative was created to encourage local philanthropy by raising awareness of organizations serving the community.
“We had imagined that Philly Gives could inspire more people to give locally when they learned about organizations doing great work in our communities,” Haas said. “Two years later, we know this is a powerful idea. Philly Gives has raised more than $1.7 million for 19 organizations.”

Pedro Ramos of the Philadelphia Foundation said nonprofits continue to face financial challenges.
“Nonprofits across our region are navigating an uncertain funding environment, shaped in large part by shifts in federal policy and support while demand for many essential services remains high,” Ramos said.
Beginning Wednesday, Action News at 4:30 p.m. will feature each of the nonprofit organizations selected to receive a $50,000 grant. Organizers are also encouraging community members to participate by making donations.
Philly Gives says its goal is to protect dignity, preserve opportunity, and invest in stability throughout the region.
