The ANNA Shelter is no stranger to animal rescues, but its latest rescue effort involved a very different kind of furry friend.

The shelter recently assisted in the rescue of more than 800 chinchillas from a local breeder, taking on the massive task of helping the animals find safe and loving homes.

According to the Anna Shelter, preparing the chinchillas for adoption will take time. Staff and volunteers are working to assess the animals’ health and needs before making them available to potential adopters.

While the adoption fee for a single chinchilla is set at $50, shelter officials say prospective owners should understand that caring for the small rodents can be more expensive than the initial fee suggests. Chinchillas require specialized housing, proper nutrition, and ongoing care to remain healthy.

To help manage the large number of animals, The Anna Shelter is partnering with local pet stores and other shelters. Officials say those partnerships will provide the chinchillas with additional space and more individualized care while they prepare for adoption.

The shelter remains hopeful that the rescued chinchillas will soon be placed in permanent homes, turning an extraordinary rescue effort into hundreds of happy endings.
