As a young man, he was a gifted athlete, and in 1956 he became the first recipient of the Daniel J. Costello Memorial Award in recognition of his outstanding ability on the football field. Later in life, he was a member of a bocce club, where he enjoyed playing with his friends and competing in tournaments.

His faith was central to his life. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church in North Scranton, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister, and brought Holy Communion to homebound members of the parish.
