S. ABINGTON TWP. — Scranton Prep’s reign as PIAA Class 2A tennis champion is over.

Allentown Central Catholic, the District 11 champion, defeated the Classics, 3-1, on Tuesday in the first round of the team tournament at Birchwood Racquet Club.

Scranton Prep, which won state titles last season and in 2023, and was runner-up in 2024, finishes the season 15-3. The Classics had eliminated ACC in the first round in each of the last two seasons.

“It’s been the experience of a lifetime,” Scranton Prep four-year starter Lily Lengyel said. “I could not be more grateful or more proud to be a part of such a great team. Being a part of a high school team taught me how to love tennis.“

Lengyel won at No. 1 singles, beating Maddie Goff, 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 11-1 all-time in the state tournament.

“I was really happy with how I played,” Lengyel said. “I played totally with the team in mind and how I could help this team win and advance.”

ACC’s Giada Montone evened the overall match with a win over Hannah LaCoe, 6-0, 6-2.

ACC took the victory by sweeping the doubles matches.

Julia Janis-Michaela Durie defeated Donatella DeNaples-Sage Michel, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1.

Charlotte Hood-Carly Eisenhard rallied to beat Scranton Prep’s Grace James-Mia Bovani, 1-6, 6-0, 6-3, to clinch the win.

ACC’s Valentina Munoz led Adithi Velaga, 6-2, 3-3 when the match was halted.

For Lengyel and Velaga, the District 2 doubles champions, their focus shifts to that tournament that starts Nov. 6 at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Last season, Lengyel won the state doubles crown with Emma Cuck, who graduated.

“It’s a mindset shift and an adjustment,” Lengyel said. “I am so excited to play with Adithi and I love doubles, so I can’t wait.”
