Join BASC and the Erie Canal Museum for a special talk about food and the Erie Canal at 2 pm in Seymour Room 220 and then head to the dining halls for the Pirates of the Port dinner starting at 4 pm on October 28.
Join BASC for a special talk titled, Erie Eats: Food & the Erie Canal, hosted by guest speaker Derrick Pratt. This event is free and open to all.
Pratt serves as the Director of Education at the Erie Canal Museum located in Syracuse, NY. This talk analyzes the dramatic changes that occurred across New York State with the construction of the Erie Canal; how it has impacted food growth, availability, and commerce from past to present.
Here’s a blurb from the museum’s website summarizing the talk:
“Food is the most basic building block of human life. We all need it to survive and thrive. But where does our food come from? How does it get to where we can eat it? Who decides what products will be available to us to eat? The answers to all of these questions, for people in Upstate New York and throughout the United States, were radically transformed by the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 and continued to change dramatically over the next 200 years as the Canal itself changed.”
This special educator talk will take place in the Seymour Union in Room 220 from 2 – 3 pm on Wednesday, October 28 before Brockport Dining Service’s Pirates of the Port dinner event that same evening.
Students who attend the event will also be entered into BASC’s Pirate Treasure Chest Raffle.
Consider joining BASC for this event! Refreshments will be provided.
