As Domestic Violence Awareness Month comes to a close, members of the Erie community gathered to honor a life lost and highlight the ongoing impact of domestic violence.
A vigil was held in memory of Victoria Ogak, who died on August 10 after suffering injuries in what authorities say began as a domestic violence incident on July 26 in the 600 block of East 13th Street.
Community members came together to remember Ogak’s life, support her loved ones, and stand in solidarity against domestic violence. Organizers say the event served as both a tribute and a call for greater awareness of an issue that continues to affect families throughout the region.
Ogak’s death has become a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence. What began as an alleged assault in late July ultimately ended in tragedy when the 38-year-old succumbed to her injuries weeks later.
During the vigil, attendees reflected on the recent tragedies that have impacted Erie and the importance of having open conversations about domestic violence and the resources available to those experiencing abuse.
Benedictine Sister Jacqueline Sanchez-Small spoke about the need for the community to continue addressing difficult topics and supporting victims and survivors. She emphasized that raising awareness and encouraging dialogue can play an important role in preventing future violence.
As the community continues to remember Victoria Ogak, the man charged in her death, Sabri Bol, remains in the Erie County Prison. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 12.
The vigil not only honored Ogak’s memory but also reinforced a message advocates say cannot be repeated often enough: domestic violence is a community issue, and awareness, support, and intervention can save lives.
