NORTHAMPTON CO., Pa. – October is recognized as domestic violence awareness month.
Tuesday night in Northampton County, the District Attorney’s office brought people together for an important conversation about the issue.
The discussion comes at a critical time.
In Northampton County, several recent homicide cases were connected to domestic violence.
“Most of our homicides in Northampton County since I’ve become a da three years ago have been domestic violence related,” says Northampton County District Attorney Stephen Baratta.
The panel brought together the experts to discuss prevention, community resources and support services like turning point of Lehigh Valley which helps people in Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties.
“Domestic violence breeds in silence and isolation and so for survivors who are living with abuse or looking to leave feel alone… and they feel isolated. And so, to know that there’s a supportive network out there for them is huge. We offer supportive services, counseling services, outreach; we have housing,” says Marlena Flora, legal advocacy director at Turning Point of Lehigh Valley.
The goal of the gathering Tuesday night was to raise awareness and show support.
“You will know when you’re ready, don’t give up on yourself. Don’t settle, when it’s time for your head and your heart to combine together. You will know when you’re ready to go,” says Connie, a domestic violence survivor.
