PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Police are investigating after thieves snagged cases of frozen snow crab in another cargo heist in Southwest Philadelphia.

It happened around 4 a.m. on Tuesday in the 3600 block of Island Avenue.

Marty Muriuki was sleeping in the cab of his truck when he realized guys were in the back stealing frozen snow crabs he was supposed to deliver.

He told police that he saw six men loading the cases into a pickup truck.

When he got out to confront the suspects, one of the thieves chased the driver down the street.

“The other guys were taking the merchandise out, so they were able to get the merchandise and then I told them, ‘Hey, stop! That’s enough! I don’t want to lose my job.’ And then I find out real quick I was on the wrong place,” said Muriuki. “One guy said, ‘We’ll pay you,’ and then all of a sudden one guy charging on me so I have to run from that corner all the way to the Resident Inn.”

The group then took off in multiple vehicles, including a gray Ford F-150 and a gray Dodge Caravan.

They were able to make off with two pallets, which contain 50 boxes that weigh 30 lbs. each, for a total of 3,000 lbs. in stolen seafood, according to police.

Muriuki said he’s been driving for more than 30 years and that this never happened.

The investigation remains ongoing with Southwest Detectives.
