ASHLAND COUNTY, OHIO (WOLF) — A small plane headed to Scranton crashed into a home in Ashland County, Ohio, Monday afternoon, injuring the pilot and a passenger, authorities said.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said troopers were called around 2:41 p.m. to Township Road 523 in Montgomery Township. Preliminary information indicates the 1968 twin-engine Beechcraft Baron B55 experienced a possible engine failure while flying east from Vermilion, Illinois, to Scranton.
The plane first hit a cornfield, then crossed into a private yard and struck a house. It came to rest in a nearby farm field.
The pilot, Richard J. Nardone, 74, of Wapwallopen, and passenger Christina M. Stephens, 25, of Wilkes-Barre, had minor injuries. Ashland Fire and EMS treated them at the scene and released them, troopers said.
Joe Lyons, a reporter with Asland County Pictures, told FOX56 he spoke with Nardone at the scene of the crash. Nardone said he was in the process of rescuing a dog in Illinois. He told Lyons he’s performed hundreds of dog rescues, usiing his plane to transport canines to their new homes.
One person was inside the home when the plane hit it. That person was not hurt.
A nearby farmer told Cleveland 19 he saw the crash, called 911 and went to help. He said he smelled fuel as he approached the aircraft.
The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Ashland Fire and EMS, and the Federal Aviation Administration assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
