Democratic Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti’s campaign denied any involvement with recently placed signs that target her 8th Congressional District opponent, Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan, but lack a “paid for by” disclaimer required by law.
Alleging election law violations while calling for an investigation, Brensahan’s campaign said in a Tuesday news release that hundreds of signs attacking the GOP incumbent appeared across Luzerne County without the required disclaimers. His campaign provided photos of the mysterious signs, which associate Bresnahan with data centers, and said witnesses saw people working out of a rental van putting them up in the middle of the night. At least several of the same signs were also spotted in Scranton.
Cognetti’s campaign had “no involvement whatsoever” with the signs, campaign spokesperson Emma Mustion said Wednesday, and their origins remain unclear. Cognetti and Bresnahan will square off Thursday in a WVIA congressional debate ahead of Tuesday’s election.
