BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The holiday season can make or break things for small businesses, and a new cafe is hoping to get a boost as it opens its doors.

69 News Reporter Sydney Kay was in Bethlehem with more on the opening and why supporting small shops matters.

The cafe, which hand whisks ceremonial-grade matcha and offers pastries and sandwiches, is located across from the Lehigh University Bookstore, according to its website.

The cafe is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Zen Cafe co-owner Andrew Underwood said the cafe is basically a combination of his and fellow-co-owner Annabel Figueroa’s favorite aspects of all the cafes they’ve visited throughout the world.

Underwood said in addition to high-quality matcha, the cafe offers coffee from a roaster in Brooklyn. The roaster sends the cafe farm-to-table coffees within 10 days.

“If you come here, you’re going to get the freshest coffee in the Lehigh Valley, and the most amazing matcha,” he said.

Zen Cafe co-owner Annabel Figueroa said Bethlehem is filled with beautiful small businesses, and it’s very important to support them.

She said the cafe is a space where guests can come to and be mindful and relaxed.

Underwood and Figueroa also own Donerds Donuts in Bethlehem.

Underwood said small businesses give the communities they are in, including SouthSide Bethlehem, their unique attitude.
