BERKS COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A man had to be rushed to the hospital after his dog accidentally caused a shotgun he was cleaning to go off.

The shooting happened late Tuesday night around 11:13 p.m. at a home on the 300 block of State Street, according to Shillington Police.

Officials said when they were called to the shooting, it was unknown who the shooter was.

While officers were heading to the scene, they were reportedly informed that a dog had jumped onto the owner’s bed.

Further investigation revealed the 53-year-old man had been cleaning a shotgun when he set it down on the bed before the dog jumped up and caused the gun to fire.

The man, police confirmed, was taken to Reading Hospital, where he went into immediate surgery for his injuries.
