One person was displaced in a fire near Lackawanna County Prison Thursday morning.

Fire personnel were called to 1336 N. Washington Ave. at about 9:20 a.m. and remained on scene for about two hours, according to Scranton Fire Chief John Judge.

Judge described damage to the single family residence as “moderate” and “repairable.”

He said the fire was caused by an electrical problem, with fire and smoke causing damage to the inside of the structure.

The sole occupant of the home, a man, was not home at the time of the fire.

Judge said the man, who he believed would be only temporarily displaced, received assistance from the Red Cross.

The house didn’t have smoke detectors, according to Judge. He reminds residents installing smoke detectors in their home is a way to save lives and property.

Every residence, Judge said, should have the appropriate amount of smoke detectors installed.

The Scranton Fire department runs a free smoke detector installation program for city residences. If a resident need smoke detectors, are a Scranton resident, and want to join the program, contact Fire Prevention Officer Daniel Frantz at 570.348.4164 ext. 1 or email smokedetectors@scrantonpa.gov.
