An Erie County jury has found an Erie man guilty of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend’s nephew and seriously injuring her.
That shooting was the first homicide of 2024.
The jury only took about an hour and a half Friday afternoon to find 36-year-old Melvin Burnett Jr., guilty of shooting Latashia McCollum and fatally shooting 35-year-old Deonte Tate.
That shooting happened on May 7, 2024, in the 700 block of West 4th Street.

Investigators said Burnett followed the two as they were leaving a bar on the west side.
Twelve witnesses and several experts testified over the three-day trial.
Sentencing is scheduled for January 20
