HARRISBURG — Susquehanna Township quarterback Torin Evans found Josh Nengite in the back of a crowded end zone with :00 showing on the clock, and the Indians pulled off a 37-35 defeat of Wyomissing in a spectacular District Three Class 4A semifinal at Roscoe Warner Field on Friday night.

That result means the Indians (12-0) have advanced to the district championship game next Friday opposite another Lancaster-Lebanon League side, Twin Valley, which blasted West York 45-14 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Twin Valley is the only other team to defeat Wyomissing this season. The Spartans were going for their sixth district title in seven years.

They seemed very much on the verge after driving to take a 35-31 lead, on Justice Hardy’s 9-yard run, with 59 seconds left in the game.

But that was enough time for Evans, a gifted dual-threat senior who completed 18-of-24 passes for 218 yards and ran for 119. He scrambled four times in the final drive, managing to get out-of-bounds to stop the clock each time.

On second down from the Wyomissing 15 he threw incomplete as the clock ticked down to :02. Then he threw a strike to Nengite, who made a grab in traffic for his second TD of the game.

“We caught him once or twice, but more often than not, he made a big play and kept drives alive,” Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum said of Evans. “They’re spread all over the field, and the quarterback killed us with his feet, probably, more than with his arm.”

Wyomissing (10-2), got three touchdowns from junior RB Hardy, including a 40-yard run and a 4-yard pass reception from QB Brady Eisenhower, Wyomissing’s only pass completion of the night.

“It would have been a great game to watch if you didn’t care about who was winning,” Wolfrum said.

“When you get to be my age, it hurts and everything, but at the end of the game, you can say it was a hell of a game. Both teams, really, and you can’t fault the effort of anybody.”
