FINDLAY TWP. ― For the first time in more than 30 years, there is a new terminal for Pittsburgh International Airport.

As of its official opening date of Nov. 18, travelers will have a whole new experience at the $1.7 billion Findlay Township facility, including more parking spaces, increased convenience in baggage, ticketing and security and a dramatic upgrade in the look of the terminal.

Here are some things to know about traveling through the airport:

How do I get to the new Pittsburgh International Airport terminal?

When you arrive at the exit to the airport from Interstate 376, there will be new signage directing you to the terminal and nearby parking. Once parked, enter the customer service building where car rental companies and baggage are located and cross into the ground floor of the terminal.

Where can I park on-site for the new terminal?

There is a new 3,300-space parking garage and 2,800-space surface lot, all within a few minutes walk to the terminal. The lots near the old terminal have been combined into a shuttle lot. Shuttles arrive every 10 minutes.

Costs vary for parking, but discounts are available for reserving spaces at ParkatPitt.com. According to the website, parking in the garage is $35 per day, $25 daily at the surface lot and $12 for a day at the shuttle lot. They each have hourly rates as well. Those picking up passengers can also park for free for an hour in a waiting lot.

Where do you go for ticketing?

As you enter the departing flights area on the top floor of the terminal, ticketing counters and check-in kiosks are to your left and right. That is where you check in baggage.

What should I expect from the new security checkpoint?

After checking in, the security lanes will be ahead. There are now 12 lanes, five more than before. There is no longer a tram. Instead, you will take a bridge tunnel to the airside gates. The walk into the Great Hall of the terminal mimics the experience of driving into Pittsburgh from the Fort Pitt Tunnel.

With the airport’s new smart scanners, passengers will be able to keep their shoes on, laptops in their bags and water and liquid sealed in their bottles.

Where is the baggage area?

Arriving passengers will be directed through the concourse for a short distance to the new baggage carousels, which have also been updated for quicker delivery to travelers. You can walk out the doors past the baggage carousels for pickups or shuttles. Those using the terminal garage or lot will need to go down one level.

What to do if staying at the Hyatt Regency hotel

Because of the terminal moving, there is no longer a walkway from the Hyatt Regency on the property to the airport. Instead, shuttles will run between the hotel and the terminal.

How soon should I arrive for flights?

Even with the changes at the new terminal, airport officials are still urging travelers to arrive within two hours of domestic flights and three hours of international flights, in case of unexpected congestion.

What concessions are available in the non-ticketed areas?

A Hudson News & Gifts and a Camden Food Market have been added to the departures level before the security checkpoint. Café Conmigo will have a location on the arrivals level near the security checkpoint.
