The City of Erie got the highest score possible on the Municipal Equality Index.
The index is a nationwide evaluation of cities that examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies and services are for the LGBTQ+ community for those who live and work here.
Kyle Hannon, communications director for the City of Erie, said the perfect score was a main focal point of Mayor Joe Schember’s term, with many points to consider.

Hannon said, “Other things were whether there were adequate benefits provided to LGBTQ individuals within the city.”
Hannon also said that its a reminder of how some implementations take time to build up.
Erie’s score improved from 50 during Mayor Schember’s first year in office up to the full 100 during each of the last four years.
