Nov. 19 (UPI) — The Philadelphia Zoo announced the birth of a pair of pied tamarin monkey twins — the second such set of twins to be born at the facility this year.

The zoo announced on social media that the twins were born in mid-September to mother Whitney and father Napoleon.

The new babies are the second set of twins born to their parents this year, after Whitney previously delivered two monkeys in February.

“Pied tamarins practice alloparenting, where multiple family members help to care for the infants,” zoo officials wrote. “In fact, in pied tamarin families, it’s the dad who primarily carries the babies on his back!”

Pied tamarins are considered critically endangered in the wild, so the births were hailed as important steps for conservation.

The sexes of the new babies have not yet been determined by zookeepers, so names will be chosen at a later date.
