Bethlehem will celebrate its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation with a free community block party featuring music, food, and cultural demonstrations on Saturday, Sept. 6 from noon to 7 p.m.
The celebration will be centered around Central Moravian Church, City Hall, and the West Church and Main streets area. It marks Bethlehem’s 2024 inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside international landmarks like the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Giza.
The event will begin with an opening ceremony featuring the presentation of the official World Heritage recognition plaque along Main Street in front of the Central Moravian Church Sanctuary.
Bethlehem’s historic Moravian settlements gained UNESCO World Heritage status on July 26, 2024, joining similar sites in Gracehill, Northern Ireland/UK; Herrnhut, Germany; and Christiansfeld, Denmark as part of a unified World Heritage designation.
Visitors to Bethlehem’s celebration can explore nine historic World Heritage locations, including the 1741 Gemeinhaus and the 1748 Single Sisters’ House, which showcase Moravian architecture and urban planning. Tours can be reserved at historicbethlehem.org.
The celebration includes multiple music stages featuring performances by the Moravian Trombone Choir, Bach Choir of Bethlehem, Central Moravian Church Choir, Mainstreet Brass and SATORI. A traditional Community Lovefeast, hosted by six Bethlehem Area Moravian Churches, will take place at 5 p.m. on the lower Church Green, followed by a free ice cream social.
The day’s activities include historic craft demonstrations by blacksmiths, Colonial brewers, tinsmiths, and potters. Opening ceremonies include the unveiling of the World Heritage commemorative mural near Main and Church streets, along with a time capsule ceremony.
Food trucks, including Hungry Hounds Express, Couchpota.doh!, Pat’s Pizza, and K’Town Pub, will be on site. The event will also feature the first-ever Moravian Sugar Cake Competition, with judging taking place in the Old Chapel Basement.

The community celebration also marks the first public event of Dr. Katherine Faull, appointed by Bethlehem as its first World Heritage Site Manager following a nationwide search. Faull begins her role on Sept. 1, while continuing to serve as founding vice president and executive director of the Institute for Moravian History and World Heritage at Moravian University.
In her new role, Faull will develop strategic vision for the site, enhance programming, lead tourism efforts, and strengthen international partnerships with other Moravian heritage locations.
She brings over 30 years of expertise in Moravian studies to the position. The former Bucknell University professor holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University and has authored several books on Moravian history, including “Moravian Women’s Memoirs: Their Related Lives 1750-1820” and “Speaking to Body and Soul: Instructions for the Moravian Choir Helpers 1785-86.”
“Katherine’s visionary leadership will deepen our understanding of Moravian heritage and make this history accessible to visitors worldwide,” said Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds, who chairs the Moravian Church Settlements — Bethlehem World Heritage Council and Commission.
