BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Now that the calendar has turned the page to October, it is time for a time-honored German tradition at SteelStacks in Bethlehem.

“This is our 15th annual Oktoberfest presented by Lehigh Valley International Airport,” said ArtsQuest director of communication, Jenn Loconte.

The event is free, with plenty to take in. “There’s four different beer gardens all the traditional German fair,” said Loconte. “You’ll see German dancing. It’s just a lot of fun for everybody.”

Yes, there is plenty of traditional German food.

Heaven On A Bun has been at Oktoberfest all 15 years. “This is a wonderful event, it’s been growing every year and great crowds,” said Mike Kelly with Heaven On A Bun.

They’ve been dishing up their own German spin on a burger. “We have a specialty here, it’s a Bavarian burger,” said Kelly. “It’s a pretzel roll with a burger with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and grilled onions with a German mustard.”

If you’re feeling up to it, you can take part in the bratwurst eating contest.

There’s a number of German inspired games.

“One of the favorites that comes back every year is the wiener dog races, the dachshund races, or any dog that is under 25 pounds and is a wiener dog at heart,” said Laconte.

There’s also stein holding contests. “We were doing that this morning and it’s hard holding those beer steins are heavy,” said Laconte.

Beer is a common theme of Oktoberfest, and the Lehigh County DA’s office wants to make sure it doesn’t lead to a DUI.

This year, they have a tent located just feet from the exit.

“We’re doing a walk the line simulation, goggles, breathalyzer test,” said Shelby Vince, Special Assistant to the Lehigh County DA.

There’s also an incentive to stop by. “If you are able to guess correctly on a quiz we’re doing Uber vouchers and those vouchers are from 5 PM to 1:30 in the morning and they will give you $20 off an Uber ride,” said Vince.

The DA’s office says they want people to have a good time, just do it responsibly.

Oktoberfest is going this weekend and next. Doors open at noon on Saturdays and Sundays, and again at 5 on Friday.
