It’s the time of year when deer strikes in Pennsylvania are about as common as the long, dark nights during which they often occur, and police are reminding the motoring public to be vigilant when driving in areas heavily populated by the animals.

The Lower Saucon Township Police Department recently issued a reminder about deer-related crashes on its Crimewatch site.

In it, police noted that during their peak mating season in the fall, deer are most active at dawn and dusk. They encouraged drivers to slow down, use their high beam headlights when possible and take notice of deer crossing signs, which are often located along roads in areas with especially high concentrations of deer.

In the event that a deer does enter the roadway, motorists should resist the urge to swerve, because doing so increases the chances of colliding with other vehicles.
