ALLENTOWN, Pa. — We’re learning more about the investigation into a deadly hit-and-run in Allentown.

Rigoberto “Rigo” Hernandez, 29, was killed last Friday when he was struck on S. Fourth Street.

Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan told 69 News that Hernandez was struck by a man driving a delivery truck after a verbal altercation.

“Certainly a tragic incident that didn’t need to happen,” Holihan stated.

The “tragic incident” left the father of three dead after a man driving a delivery truck hit him, then sped away.

“There was an altercation between two drivers. The victim in this case exited his vehicle, we believe, to confront the driver of the van,” Holihan explained.

Holihan said there’s no indication the victim and the driver knew each other previously.

“We’re trying to locate any video cameras that may have recorded the episode,” Holihan said.

A loss felt not only by Hernandez’s family but also the company that employed him for the last decade.

“I’ve known Rigo for almost 10 years. Aside from him being family and a personal friend, it’s a major loss for us,” said Josiah Gamez of East Coast Facilities.

Gamez and his family own East Coast Facilities.

“Rigo started working for us a long time ago, and I’ve sort of grown up with him,” Gamez explained.

Gamez said he worked closely with Hernandez, overseeing the department he served as a supervisor in.

“He’s a humble person, loyal, trustworthy, gets the job done type of person. He was a husband, father, a good father and loved by everyone. I spoke to him about an hour before the incident happened. We were in close communication every day,” Gamez stated.

Gamez didn’t know the severity of the situation when he found out Hernandez was hurt after being struck by a man driving a delivery truck after a verbal altercation on the 2400 block of S. 4th Street.

“I had gotten a phone call that he was in an accident without really knowing what happened and the immediate thought was let me go to the hospital and just make sure he’s okay,” Gamez recalled.

Hernandez was also a husband, as well as father to an 11-year-old, 7-year-old and 3-year-old.

“He took care of his family and right now they’re completely devastated. We’re doing the best we can to show our support to the family and help them with coordinating funeral arrangements and the burial with his wife. We’ve set up a GoFundMe for his family,” Gamez said.

The crash is still under investigation. Charges have not yet been filed against the driver.
