SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Scranton officials announced on Monday that a Code Blue will be in place for Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

The Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency and the City of Scranton declared a Code Blue Frigid Weather Alert for Thursday, November 27, from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Friday, November 28, then again at 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29.

A Code Blue is issued when temperatures drop below 20° and is how officials communicate to residents when frigid temperatures will impact the City of Scranton.

Emergency shelter can be found at the following locations:

St. Anthony’s Haven at 409 Olive Street in Scranton, open 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Community Intervention Center at 445 North 6th Avenue in Scranton, open 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (open later if needed).

Officials say the Weston Field is not open yet.

The City of Scranton gave some important tips to stay warm amid the extreme cold:

Make sure your car is winterized with antifreeze, a full tank of gas, properly inflated tires, and an emergency kit.

Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

Do not operate generators in enclosed spaces and make sure they are vented properly.

Wear appropriate clothing and avoid prolonged exposure.

Limit outdoor time for pets.

Check on your elderly neighbors.

Report power outages directly to your utility company; Do not call 911.

Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.
