SPRING TWP., Pa. – The holidays are all about love, and that means taking care of the community around you. In Spring Township, a bank is partnering with a local nonprofit to make sure families in need are getting a chance to open up a present this year.
“We’re doing for the third year, an ‘angel tree’ for Opportunity House. We have a partnership with them, and we try and help them out as often as we can,” said Jennifer Pelker, Discovery Federal Credit Union.
At Discovery FCU in Spring Township, a small tree carries a whole lot of love.
“Angel trees help those who need a little extra love during the holidays,” Pelker said.
This year, the credit union is bringing extra blessings to more homes.
“We are helping five families this year,” Pelker said. “One of them is a set of grandparents with their grandchildren at home, a couple sets of single moms with their children as well, and then a dad who has [multiple sclerosis] with his kids at home as well.”
“They are kids that range from children to adults, and we are attempting to help every family,” Pelker said.
It’s an effort that’s making wishes and dreams come true.
“There is anything from necessities, like socks, shampoos, conditioners,” Pelker said. “There’s also gift cards, toys, books, toiletries, anything that the kids have put on their lists.”
You don’t have to be a member of Discovery FCU to participate. Just stop right over and pick an ornament off the tree.
“Each ornament contains an item for each participant in each of the families,” Pelker said. “Bring back the unwrapped gift by December 17, and we will deliver to those families in order for in time for Christmas.”
