Our Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia’s (BCGP) educational programs began in April and continued through early November.  Our programs include partnerships with the Better Bike Share Partnership (BBSP), Bartram’s Garden Bike Hub (BGBH), Lil Safety Village (LSV), and Lloyd Hall Learn to Ride Classes (LHLTR). These free programs were held in Philadelphia and are expected to continue into the new year. I wanted to take a moment to share with you some highlights from each program and give praise to our amazing team that made all of this possible.

Better Bike Share Partnership and Indego

BBSP is a collaboration funded by the Freedom Together Foundation, formerly known as The JPB Foundation, aimed at increasing access to and use of shared micromobility systems in low-income and BIPOC communities. The partners include the City of Philadelphia, the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), and PeopleForBikes. BCGP has been partnering with Indego for the past 10 years by providing free classes and rides to communities where they expand. Key highlights from this year’s programming include:

A total of 233 participants attended 25 combined bicycle classes and rides. A new Station off the Cobbs Creek Trail allows riders to explore the underutilized pathway. All-female lead team of Indego Ambassadors (a program first!).

A big thank you to our BBSP Educators who dedicate their time and energy to this program: Joe Franco, Kelly Lawler, Lan Ngo, Lina Duiker, Marialejandra Bolaños Leal, Miguel Santana, and Miriam Pallant.

Bartram’s Garden Bike Hub

The Bicycle Coalition and Bartram’s Garden have been hard at work providing free Learn-to-Ride classes for adults and kids since 2022. Together we have put over 2000 people on bikes to explore the Bartram’s Mile Trail. In 2025 at the Bike Hub at Bartram’s Garden, 464 people rode bikes with us. We will continue to provide rides for friends and family to ride together and look forward to the Grays Ferry Swing Bridge is completion in 2026!

Adult Learn-to-Ride (Bartram’s Garden)

Thank you to our Bartram’s Bike Hub Manager, Jack Kavanagh, and Bike Hub Assistant Manager, Saraine “Ling” Cheng. They have been consistently teaching and managing the hub since 2022.

Lil Safety Village in Hunting Park

A hidden gem in North Philly is the Lil Philly Safety Village, located directly in Hunting Park. It was officially opened in August of 2021 for kids 12 years of age and under. Since then, the Bicycle Coalition has welcomed over 500 kids to participate in play sessions, and we expect programs to grow over the next three years thanks to support from the William Penn Foundation. Some of our favorite moments from this year in Hunting Park include:

Bike giveaways during Hustle and Ride and Lil Safety Village eventsPartnering with Hunting Park United for Family Fitness Day in August Trick or Trek Scavenger Haunt in October

Play Session at Hustle N Ride (Hunting Park)

Bike Giveaway (Hunting Park United Family Fitness day)

Special thanks to Hunting Park Gardens for storing our bikes and Hunting Park United for their continued support for more bicycle safety in the park.

Lloyd Hall Learn to Ride Classes

Our longest-running bicycle education class (over 12 years!), classes are held monthly at Lloyd Hall behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The program is supported by Fun Wheels Rentals and our volunteers. This year, over 30 people attended these classes — we are so thrilled to welcome new riders to the joy of cycling!

A big shout-out to Stan and Kim Barndt for volunteering with the BCGP for over 12 years, continuing the work of teaching new riders how to ride and ride safely.

This year was a successful year for all bicycle educational programming at the BCGP. We want to thank our funders who make these programs possible: The William Penn Foundation, People for Bikes, Freedom Together Foundation, PennDOT, and Philly Bike Ride. We look forward to the 2026 season, which will run from April to November.

We are always looking for more enthusiastic people to join our BCGP education team. If you or someone you know is interested, please reach out to Lor Song at lor.song@bicyclecoalition.org

Safe streets are a right, not a privilege. We’re creating a stronger community WITH YOU! Investing in our year-round advocacy and education work makes Greater Philadelphia a safer and more fun place to ride—right now, the Coalition is asking 750 folks to join or renew their support for another year to continue that work. More info here.
